1. A distillation column is to be designed to separate a mixture of
32mole% of ethanol and 68mole% of water into an overhead product
containing 88.2mole% ethanol and a bottom product containing
90.1mole% water. The feed is entering the distillation column at 320.5
K and 1 atm pressure. The average heat capacity of the feed is
173.3kJ/kgmol.K and the average latent heat 45922 kJ/kgmol.K. The
feed has a boiling point of 357.2 K. By using four times of the minimum
reflux ratio, calculate the kgmol per hour distillate and kgmol per hour
bottoms, the number of theoretical plates and the position of the feed
plate (Use the equilibrium data for ethanol-water system from
Geankoplis, App. A.3.23).
2. An aqueous feed of 800 kg/h containing 7mole% acetic acid and
93mole% water is being extracted in a countercurrent multistage
extraction system using pure isopropyl ether at a rate of 2100 kg/h at
298 K. The outlet water stream contains 3wt% acetic acid. Calculate
the compositions and amount of the exit extract and raffinate streams
(Use the equilibrium data for this system from Geankoplis App.A.2.34).
Good Luck!..
