Mitosis vs. Meiosis
MITOSIS
MEIOSIS
1. Asexual reproduction in
Unicellular organisms.
In multi-cellular organisms,
it is necessary for growth, repair
and replacement of old cells.
1. Necessary for sexual reproduction.
2. Only one replication of
chromosomes occurs in cell
cycle.
2. Only one replication of chromosomes
occurs in cell cycle.
3. Only one division of
chromosomes occurs in cell
cycle.
3. Two divisions of chromosomes
occurs in cell cycle.
4. Each parent cells divides
to form 2 daughter cells.
4. Each parent cell divides to form
4 daughter cells.
5. Each daughter cell receives
the same number of chromosomes
as the parent cell (full set)
A full set of chromosomes is
referred to as diploid or 2N.
Mitosis occurs in every
cell in your body except
your sex cells. These are your
SOMATIC cells.
5. Each daughter cell receives one
half the number of chromosomes
as the parent cell.
This is referred to as haploid or 1N.
Meiosis occurs only in you sex
cells to produce your gametes your egg or sperm.
