7th Grade Integrated Science
Cells 3-1
Indicator
a. Use appropriate instruments
to observe, describe, and
compare various types of
cells
Main Ideas/ILOS
 A microscope will reveal differences between cells.
 Students will be able to focus a light microscope.
b. Observe and distinguish the
cell wall, cell membrane,
nucleus, chloroplast, and
cytoplasm of cells.
c. Differentiate between plant
and animal cells based on cell
wall and cell membrane.

d. Model the cell processes of
diffusion and osmosis and
relate this motion to the
motion of particles.

e. Gather information to report
on how the basic functions of
organisms are carried out
within cells



Plant cells have a cell membrane and a cell wall. They have green chloroplasts.
They are regular in shape, boxlike.
Animals cells vary in shape because they do not have cell walls. The flexible cell
membrane holds them together. They lack chloroplasts.
Diffusion is the movement of atoms and molecules from an area of high
concentration to one of low concentration. This occurs because all matter is
composed of moving particles.
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules through a membrane from an area
of high concentration to low.
Investigate how cells extract energy from food, remove waste, produce their own
food.
