Science Notes for Cell Quiz 1 – Condensed Notes
The CELL is the basic unit of living things.
Living Things have this in common:
1 organization - made up of cells, similar chemicals
2 use energy
3 has ability to develop and grow
4 ability to respond to environment
5 ability to reproduce
6 ability to adapt to environment
CELL THEORY:
1. all organisms are composed of 1 or more cell
2. cell is the most basic unit of structure &
organization in living things
3. all cells come from other cells
MICROSCOPES led to discovery of cells because it
makes objects appear bigger than they are
**study your microscope paper with parts labeled
Know your FAMOUS SCIENTISTS :
ZACHARIS JANSSEN – made the first compound
microscope, made lenses for eyeglasses with his son
ANTON VAN LEEUWENHOEK – made a simple
microscope and observed pond scum through his
microscope and called the small cell organisms
“animalcules”
ROBERT HOOKE – discovered cells while looking at a
thin slice of cork and CALLED THEM CELLS
MATTHIAS SCHLEIDEN – concluded that plants are
made of cells ( clue – sliding (Schleiden) on a banana peel
(plant)
THEODORE SCHWANN – stated that all animal tissues
are composed of cells ( clue – Schwann/swan/animal )
RUDOLPH VIRCHOW – concluded that all cells come
from other cells
