ECOLOGY: Vocabulary Questions: Please type answers and hand in to BE GRADED
AS A TEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. For Abiotic and Biotic: List possible Abiotic and Biotic factors that you may find
in a fish tank.
2. For Population, community, ecosystems, biomes, and biosphere: Use a Frog in
explaining each example.
3. For Limiting factors and carrying capacity: How do Limiting factors affect
Carrying Capacity?
4. Biodiversity: Why is having more Biodiversity in an Ecosystem more beneficial
to the stability of that Ecosystem?
5. For Consumers, decomposers, producers, food chains, food webs, and energy
flow through a community: Why are decomposers necessary? What is the
difference between consumers and producers? What is the difference between
food chains and webs? What do the arrows in a food chain or food web
represent?
6. For Mutualism, commensalism, parasitism, and symbiosis: Give example of each
relationship using organisms and tell which benefits and which if any are harmed
or unaffected.
7. For Material cycles: Oxygen/ Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen, and Water cycle: Tell
how each plays a role in Ecosystem stability.
8. For Foreign species introduction, habitat, and niche: How would introduction of
foreign species affect an organisms habitat and niche?
9. For Primary Succession and Secondary Succession: Explain Re-growth of a
forest using appropriate term.
10. For Competition, Herbivores, omnivores, carnivores: Are these Autotrophs or
Heterotrophs? Explain competition using one kind of organism.
11. For Pioneer organisms, climax community, ecological succession, tundra, taiga,
temperate-deciduous forest, tropical rain forest, grasslands, desert: Pick a Biome
and Explain terms using that Biome as an example.
12. For overhunting, exploitation of wildlife, and importation of exotic organisms:
Explain how each decreases biodiversity and why this would be detrimental to an
ecosystem.
13. Biological Magnification: Explain using DDT as an example.
14. For Pollutants, heat pollution, sewage pollution, PCB’s, air pollution, Biocide use:
Explain how each affects an Ecosystem and state one way to help stop/ reduce
each.
