Cell – a membrane covered structure that contains all the materials necessary
for life – the smallest unit / the building blocks of life. Plant cells are
eukaryotic and contain three extra organelles (chloroplasts, cell walls and
vacuoles).
Tissue – a group of similar CELLS that work together to perform a specific job
in a plant. There are three types of tissue in a plant cell:
 Dermal – means skin
 Vascular – means small vessel (xylem & phloem are
examples)
 Ground – “filler” tissue
Organ – a combination of two or more TISSUES that work together to
perform a specific function in the plant.
 Roots
 Stems
 Leaves
Organ System – a group of ORGANS that work together to perform functions
for a plant
 Shoot system (above ground)
 Root system (underground)
Organism – anything that can independently carry out life processes – consists
of one or more ORGAN SYSTEMS. In this unit we are focusing on plants.
