Spelling Activities Matrix Directions: Each week you will choose at least three of the activities in the matrix below to complete for your spelling homework. You will complete the activities on loose leaf notebook paper and staple them together to turn in on Friday morning. Along with the three activities you choose from the matrix, you will also be required to complete a practice spelling test on Thursday night that must be signed by a parent. 5 times each Write each word in your best handwriting five times each. ABC Order Write your words in alphabetical order. Telephone Words Translate your words into numbers from the telephone keypad. Surround Words Write your words on graph paper and outline them in different colors. Crossword Puzzle Create your own crossword puzzle using your words. Be sure to include clues to go across and down. Backwards Words Write your words forwards, then backwards. Word Search Create your own word search puzzle using your words. Rainbow Words Write your words using three different colors. Scrambled Words Write your words, then write them again with the letters mixed up. 30 Second Words Write a TV commercial using all of the words on your list. Underline each word as you use it. Cheer Your Words Pretend you are a cheerleader. Write a cheer that calls out the spelling of at least 4 of your words. Underline each word used. Definitions Write the definition of each word in your own terms. Secret Agent Words Number the alphabet 1-26, and then convert your words to a number code. Other Handed Write your words as best as you can using your opposite hand. (If you are right-handed, write with your left, and vice versa.) Picture Words Draw a picture to illustrate each word. Write a caption using the word to describe the picture. Silly Sentences Write a silly sentence using each of your words. Spelling Puzzles Write each word on an index card. Cut the cards so that the letters are separated. Place cards in an envelope. Practice putting the words back together. Ransom Words Write your words by cutting out letters in a newspaper or magazine and glue them on your paper. X Words Write two words having one common letter so they criss-cross. Do this for all of your words. (Some words may be used more than once.) Pyramid Words Write your words adding or subtracting one letter at a time. The result will be a pyramid shape of words. Reverse ABC Write your words in reverse alphabetical order. Vowels and Consonants Write your words so that all vowels are red, and all consonants are blue. Syllable Words Write each word and divide each word into syllables. Story Words Write a short story using all of your words. Underline each word as it is used.
