Since the early 1900s, foreign countries have controlled China’s trade and economic resources  they
were ready for change.
Kuomintang
 The Nationalist Party
o Wanted more modernization, nationalism, and no more emperors. Overthrew the Qing Dynasty.
 Sun Yixian was one of the first leaders – considered “Father of modern China”
o Wanted political and economic rights for all Chinese people.
o Did not have the support of the military
May Fourth Movement
 Demonstrations all over China protesting the Treaty of Versailles - and the Allies - for giving German
land around China to Japan, and not returning control of China to the Chinese.
Jiang Jieshi (aka Chiang Kai-shek)
 Leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) after Sun Yixian
 Didn’t like the Communists in China, and almost destroyed them in the Shanghai Massacre
Mao Zedong
 A protestor in the May Fourth Movement
 Leader of the Chinese Communist Party and Communist revolution
 Fought against the corruption of Jiang’s government
 Had support of the peasants
Long March
 6,000 mile long journey the Communists were forced to take – their escape to safety after being
surrounded by Nationalist forces during the civil war (between the Nationalists and Communists)
