Narcotics
Name/Type of Illegal Drug: Narcotics
A: Key Idea:
Narcotics are a group of drugs that slows down and depresses the central nervous system and relieves
pain.

Slows down body functions, such as breathing and heart rate.
Often prescribed by physicians as analgesics. A drug to relieve pain.
These should only be used with the supervision of a physician.
Opium: white milky fluid from the seedpod of the poppy plant.
Morphine: natural occurring substance extracted from the poppy plant.
Codeine: painkiller produced from morphine
Heroin: a narcotic processed from morphine
B. Harmful Effects
i.
Can cause immediate death. Large doses slow down breathing and
cause coma even death.
ii.
Person may experience euphoria, drowsiness, nausea, rapid heartbeat,
and clammy skin.
iii.
Very dangerous with individuals with respiratory problems which may
interfere with breathing and coughing. May cause allergic reactions
causing skin rash.
iv.
Lack of reasoning and poor judgment to make responsible decisions.
People become depressed and lazy.
v.
Repeated use increases tolerance and lead to physical dependency.
After the person stops taking drug may develop depression and have
mood swings and be very sensitive to pain.

Can lead to psychological dependence. Malnutrition, infections and
illness or injury. They may look to steal to support habit.

a. Opium: O. Smoke/illegal. Extremely addictive
b. Morphine: Morph, Miss Emma. Injected, snorted, smoked or swallowed/illegal without prescription.
One of the strongest pain relievers used in medicine, cause addiction and severe withdrawal
symptoms, can cause respiratory arrest and death.
c. Codeine, Swallowed/illegal without prescription, available in very small amounts in OTC drugs.
Painkiller; cough suppressant, sleep aid.
d. Heroin: Smack, junk, brother, garbage. Injected, snorted, smoked/illegal. Extremely addictive, can
cause respiratory arrest and death, severe withdrawal symptoms. Heroin injection heightens the
risk for infection with HIV and hepatitis B.
