SYLLABUS
I.
PREREQUISITE
Grades of 2.0 or better in Medical Terminology I (BTECH 150).
II.
STUDENT OUTCOMES. Upon successful completion of this course, the
student will have the fundamentals upon which to build a medical vocabulary.
The student will be able to:
1. Define pathological conditions of different body systems and diagnostic
techniques used in treating these disorders
2. Identify and define the abbreviations common to each body system
3. Pronounce each term as it is introduced on the audio cd
4. Define the different types of diabetes and identify their differences
5. List the nine endocrine glands and the hormones secreted by each
6. Identify and label the structures of the eye
7. Identify the pathway of sound from the external auditory canal to the cerebral
cortex
8. Proofread the medical reports for different body systems
9. Identify and label the internal structure of the kidney
10. List the major functions of the urinary system
11. Identify the structures involved in the process of forming and expelling urine
12. Label the structures of the male and female reproductive systems
13. Identify secondary sex characteristics that occur in the body at the onset of
puberty
14. Identify and define at least six sexually transmitted diseases
15. Identify the four phases of the menstrual cycle
16. Identify and define the steps involved in breast self-examination, as well as
the different surgical approaches to removing a malignant growth from the
female breast
17. Identify the five classifications of Pap Smear findings
18. State the difference between presumptive and probably signs of pregnancy
19. List the changes that occur in the body during pregnancy and the possible
complications
20. Differentiate between the symptoms of impending labor; false and/or true
labor
21. Identify and define at least 20 pathological conditions common to children
22. List and define the most common communicable diseases seen in children
23. State the recommended immunization schedule for infants and children

25. Identify common radiological positions or movements based on their
descriptions
26. List and define the different surgical procedures used in the diagnosis/cure or
malignant tumors
27. List and define the different tumor responses to radiation therapy
28. Identify the laws and governing agencies that enforce the safe manufacture,
distribution, and use of food, drugs, and cosmetics
29. List the drug schedules used for categorizing controlled substances
30. Identify at least ten drug actions/interactions that occur within the body
31. List and identify at least 14 classifications of drugs
32. List and define ten defense mechanisms
33. Identify at least five phobias and 20 mental disorders
34. Define different treatments, therapies, and tests used in the practice of mental
health
35. Work independently or in diverse teams
36. Evaluate the impact of personal attendance and meeting deadlines

Comprehensive Medical Terminology, Fourth Edition, Betty Davis Jones, Delmar,
2011.
One 3 ½” High Density Disk or Flash Drive. USB or Flash drive is
recommended.
Scantron sheets for 12 tests.

ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE
This is a suggested schedule to help you finish the course in ten weeks. There
will be 12 tests to complete before the end of the quarter. You may choose to
work faster than the following schedule outlines, but you must meet weekly due
dates. Please see your instructor or call (253) 964-6233 immediately if you are not
able to stay on schedule.
For each chapter listed below, you will need to complete the following:
1. Read and complete all parts of the written terminology review.
2. Complete all chapter review exercises with the exception of the
crossword puzzles.
3. Complete the CD-ROM exercises for each chapter with at least 80%
accuracy.
Steps 1-3 listed above must be turned in or checked off prior to taking each test,
or you will not receive credit.
