Glossary
Affix: a bound inflectional or derivational element, as a prefix, infix, or suffix, added to a base or stem to form a fresh stem or a word, as -ed
added to want to form wanted, or im- added to possible to form impossible.
Compound Word: A compound word is made when two words are joined to form a new word (base + ball = baseball).
Consonant Digraph: two consonants working together to make one sound (kn-, wr-, sh-, th-, wh-, ch-).
Consonant Suffix: A suffix beginning with a consonant letter (-ly, -ness, -less).
Contractions: shortened form of a word or group of words, with the omitted letters often replaced in written English by an apostrophe, as
e'er for ever, isn't for is not, dep't for department.
Homophone: a word pronounced the same as another but differing in meaning, whether spelled the same way or not, as heir and air.
Plural: indicating that a word has more than one referent.
Polysyllabic: consisting of several, especially four or more, syllables, as a word.
Preconsonantal nasals: nasal sounds (m, n, ng) that occur before consonants, as in the words bump or sink.
Prefix: an affix that comes before the base word to which it is added, as in re- in return.
Suffix: an affix that follows the base word to which it is added, as -ly in kindly.
Syllable: single unit of speech—every syllable has one and only one vowel sound.
Syllable Juncture: finding the place at which syllables are joined.
Vowel Suffix: a suffix beginning with a vowel letter (-er, -ing, -es).
