SPACE AND
LIGHT:
EDWARD
GORDON
CRAIG
Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966) was a
pioneering director, designer, theoretician
and print-maker. A controversial figure
in his day, Craig’s influence in all his
fields of endeavour is now widely
recognised. His writings on theatre are
seminal, and his advances in that field
have shaped performance today.
Professor J. Michael Walton
(Hull University) describes him as:
…one of Britain’s desperately few
original and provocative artists who
happened to want to work through the
medium of theatre…
Space & Light: Edward Gordon Craig will
explore Craig’s career, life, and continuing
legacy, bringing all three to life for
audiences both familiar and unfamiliar
with Craig’s story and work.
The exhibition has been conceived in
two parts. The first is a self-contained
installation unit that is easily
transportable and installable in a
variety of venues. The unit constitutes
an immersive experience featuring
sound, graphic projection and a core
interactive station, intended firstly to
engage the visitor with Craig’s thoughts,
theories and methods of practise; and
secondly to vivify his various working
and private relationships with his
mother Ellen Terry, Isadora Duncan,
Eleonora Duse and Konstantin
Stanislavski.
The second component of the exhibition
is a display of 45 of his stunning
woodcuts, designed to hang on the
surrounding gallery walls.
2D
DISPLAY
In addition to being a pioneering ‘man
of the theatre’ Craig was an
accomplished professional print-maker.
Craig exhibited his works widely, and
his talent was affirmed by the many
notable contemporaries who elected
to exhibit alongside him, including:
Augustus John, William Nicholson,
William Rothenstein, Lucien Pissarro,
and Robert Gibbings. Contemporary
and critic Haldane McFall noted: “He
is a wise man who seeks for woodcuts
by Gordon Craig, for they are, amongst
the supreme achievements of our time.”
Space & Light: Edward Gordon Craig
will include a display of 41 woodengravings, wood cuts, etchings and
wash drawings by Craig from the
V&A’s collections. These demonstrate
Craig’s skill in each medium and his
application of them to the exploration
of space and light, and to the
development of his theatrical principles.
This display is designed to appeal to
audiences with an interest in art, as
well as to those with an interest in
theatre and design.
Also featured are photographs charting
Craig’s life and times – 4 framed, plus
a reel of projected stills – which reveal
the historical context in which he was
producing his various works.
The 2D display and visual projection can
be adapted to suit any venue. The
outer walls of the installation unit will
support a core selection of the 2D
material. The remaining display items,
including the projection, may be
reduced or excluded depending upon
the capacity of each venue.
