STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES FORM
(For Domestic Fowl, Native Fauna/Wildlife, Domestic Livestock & Laboratory Animals)
Title of Procedure:
Guidelines for the use of Pentobarbitone by UNE Staff for the purpose of humane
animal destruction (G4)
To permit and facilitate the legal use of pentobarbitone, for the humane
destruction of animals by non-veterinarians who are not in possession of a
relevant authority, the following set of regulations applies:





that the drug be obtained and distributed on and under the authority of
the Animal House Manager (as a registered veterinary surgeon and in
accordance with the Poisons Act 1966 – see Appendix 1) and that the
Animal House Manger keep a suitable register documenting details of
the procurement and issue of the drug at UNE departments as required
under the Poisons Act 1966 (for details see Appendix 2);
that the Animal House Manager nominate which person(s) from each of
the relevant departments is/are competent, and hence will be
authorised, to hold and use pentobarbitone with which to euthanise
animals (for details see Appendix 3);
that the Animal House Manager approve a suitable storage facility and
drug register (as under the Poison Act 1966 – see Appendix 1) for the
euthanasia solution held in each department;
that in each department a register be: set up (as in 3), maintained by
the authorised departmental pentobarbitone user and inspected at
interval by the Director of Animal Welfare;
with respect to 2: that any necessary instruction and training be given by
the Animal House Manager to the person(s) chosen to be ‘authorised’
departmental users of pentobarbitone.
