Hand and Wrist ROM Testing

Wrist Flexion and Extension
Forearm is pronated with the hand off the edge of the table.
Wrist flexion-fingers are allowed to extend
Wrist extension-fingers are allowed to flex
Fulcrum
Over the lateral joint line of the wrist
Stationary Arm
Centered on the midline of the ulnar shaft
Movement Arm
Centered on the midline of the fifth metacarpal
Normal Range
Flexion- 80° to 90°
Patient Position
Radial and Ulnar Deviation
Forearm is pronated with the hand resting on the table
Fulcrum
Aligned with the center of the distal radioulnar joint, just proximal to the capitate
Stationary Arm
Centered over the midline of the forearm
Movement Arm
Centered over the third metacarpal
Normal Range
Radial Deviation- 20°
Patient Position
Finger Flexion and Extension
Hand is placed in its neutral position
Fulcrum
Positioned over the dorsal aspect of the joint being tested
Stationary Arm
Centered on the midline of the bone proximal to the joint being tested
Movement Arm
Centered on the midline of the bone distal to the joint being tested
Extension- 75° to 85°
Ulnar Deviation- 35°

Finger Abduction and Adduction
Hand is placed in its neutral position

Centered over the MCP joint being tested

Centered over the metacarpal of the joint being tested
