The Civil War The Most Important Battles Fort Sumter • Where it started. • Confederates attacked the Union fort. Bull Run • Led by General “Stonewall Jackson” the Confederates defeated the Union • First major battle of the Civil War • Confederates created the “Rebel Yell” Monitor vs. Merrimack • First battle with “iron clad” ships • On March 9, 1862 both ships exchanged fire but neither could sink each other Shiloh • Heavy casualties on both sides • Grant led Union to a narrow victory • Gained control of Corinth and then later Memphis, Tennessee Antietam • September 17, 1862 • Was the bloodiest day of the war • Crucial victory for the Union, allowed Lincoln to take action on slavery Gettysburg • Confederates were on the offensive • Lasted three days • The Union fought them off and drove them out of Pennsylvania Vicksburg • Union victory • Gave union control of the Mississippi • Sealed off Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas Sherman’s March to the Sea • Sherman march from Atlanta to Savannah • They cut a path of destruction up to fifty miles wide • Total war resulting in a Union victory Results of the War • Most devastating conflict in American History • 600,000 soldiers died • Roughly two thirds of transportation in the South destroyed
