The Social Psychology of
the Greasers vs. The Socs
PREJUDICE
● “prejudgement”
● An attitude about another person based on his or her
perceived membership to a group.
● Attitudes lead toward approach/avoidance behaviors.
● For example: You like a pair of jeans only because you
like the name brand, not because they’re comfortable.
STEREOTYPE
● Stereotypes are cognitions or beliefs
o
Cognition is the mental action of gaining knowledge
through thought, experience, and the senses.
● A person categorizes a person based on
their membership to a social group.
o
o
For example: She is a girl. Girls are giggly. She is
giggly.
Even if it’s a complementary stereotyping, it can
be harmful if they don’t fit into that category.
The harm of the Stereotype Threat
● A social psychologist, Claude Steele,
performed a study on the effect of
perceived stereotypes on the academic
performance of minority and female
students.
● Self Fulfilling Prophesy
o
If your group doesn’t do well, you won’t either.

stereotypes.

Reflection Questions
● What about the video reminded you about
the novel?
● Why did the children fight on the
playground? Was it justified? Why or why
not?
● Have any of the characters expressed some
of the same feelings the students felt?
