Americans purchase 3 billion batteries a year, use them, and then throw them into a land fill. Batteries contain heavy metalsmercury, lead, cadmium, and nickel – which are left in these landfills to leak into the environment. These metals can have a permanent environmental impact. Senior Design 2009-10 Team BioVolt will design a microbial fuel cell, commonly called a “biobattery,” which will use bacteria and purely organic compounds to create power. The only emission from this battery will be clean carbon dioxide. Team: Andrew Huizenga, Lindsay Arnold, Diane Esquivel, and Jeff Christians
