Special Cells
I. Living Things Are Organized Into
Systems
The largest system is an organ system.
The order of organization is:
organ system  organs  tissues  cells
All of these systems, including cells, are
specialized. What does specialized mean?

I. Living Things Are Organized Into
Systems
Why do you think cells are specialized? Why
don’t they all have the same structure and
function?

II. Can you figure out the functions of
these cells based on their structure?

III. So, where do all these special
cells come from?
1. Sperm fertilizes egg
2. The cell divides into
more cells
3. The cells are called
STEM CELLS
III. So, where do all these special
cells come from?
• Stem cells are called pluripotent because
they are unspecialized and can give rise
to any type of cell.
• Even as an adult, a person has stem cells
that can divide into more stem cells or
differentiate into other types of cells.
III. So, where do all these special
cells come from?
•
Because stem cells can become any
type of cell, there is a large amount of
research being conducted to determine
how they could be used to help people
with diseases and other health problems.
How Do We Get Stem Cells?
