•Abstinence- Conscious decision not to participate in a sexual
activity
Film- a 2inch by 2 inch paper thin sheet with a chemical that
kills sperm . It is placed near the cervix at the opening of the
uterus ( Drug store without a prescription)
Cervical cap- thimble shape latex rubber device in which
spermicide is put onto first and then placed in the women’s
cervix. (Must be fitted and prescribed by a doctor)
Outercourse- sexual intimacy that does not include the penis
entering the vagina or anus.
Mini Pills- pill that contains only one hormone and makes the
cervical mucus thicker. No Estrogen. (Prescription needed)
Condoms for men- a mechanical barrier, either latex,
polyutherane, or natural membranes, that is placed on the
penis. (Drugstore)
Contraceptives continued…
 Foam (spermicide vaginal film)- a contraceptive that kills or destroys
sperm as well as blocking a man’s fluid from entering the cervical canal. (You
can buy foams, jellies and the sponge from a drugstore or at some clinics without a prescription )
 Vasectomy- operation that blocks the tubes that carry sperm to the outside.
 Condoms for women- a thin plastic that is placed into the women’s vagina.
(Can buy female condoms at most drugstores, STI clinics, and family planning clinics.)
 IUD( intrauterine contraceptive)- a small device which is placed inside the
uterus. (All IUDs must be inserted and removed by a doctor)
 Diaphragm- rubber dome shaped device in which a woman puts into her
vagina. (Must be fitted and prescribed by a doctor. It should be replaced every 2 years )
 Tubal sterilization- operation that blocks tubes carrying a woman’s egg to
her uterus.
 Depo-provera injections- an injection that provides a hormone to a woman
thus preventing the release of an egg. (A physician must prescribe this medication. )
 Emergency contraceptive pills (Plan B)- two large doses of birth control
pills which may be taken within 120 hours after unprotected intercourse to
prevent pregnancy. (Available over the counter for consumers 17 and older. Prescription required if consumers under 17.)
Combines birth control pills- contains two hormones: progesterone and
estrogen. (Prescription by doctor)
