Mission

The core mission of CDI is to promote faculty and student research and
service-learning projects that support innovative ways to develop local
communities.
Objective

To achieve its mission, CDI leads a portfolio of collaborative initiatives
and partnerships employing university students studying in a variety of
fields seeking to understand and meet community challenges in new
ways.
The 2010 Census Partnership

In partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, CDI is working with the City of
San Angelo, Tom Green County, and numerous local groups and
organizations to promote awareness and a high level of local response to
the 2010 Census.
The San Angelo Social Health Index
______________________________________________________________________
This signature CDI research project uses 18 indicators to index, measure, and
track major social problems challenging the development of the San Angelo
community since 2000.

The San Angelo Social Health Documentary
Film Project
__________________________________________________________________
The CDI is collaborating with the Department of Communication, Drama, and
Journalism to produce a film documentary that discusses the social health of
San Angelo in real-life stories.
The San Angelo Social Capital Index

The goal is this CDI research project is to develop an index measurement of
the social resources available in the San Angelo community to address major
challenges to local development.
City of San Angelo Community Development
Evaluation Project
__________________________________________________________________
In collaboration with the City of San Angelo Community Development
Department, CDI is conducting a survey research project focusing on the
social, economic, and political needs of the city’s low-income neighborhoods.
The Galilee Community Development Corporation
(GCDC) Project
_________________________________________________________________
CDI is working with GCDC, a local non-profit organization specializing in
affordable housing, to help develop innovative additions to their services such
as:
 a one-stop shop for prospective affordable housing clients.
 an individual development savings program for low-income individuals and
families.
The Drug Free Community Baseline Study

CDI is helping ADACCV and CV CARES develop a baseline study of substance
abuse to establish a benchmark for measuring and evaluating the impact of
the Drug Free Community Coalition over the next five years.
The Neighborhood Action and Investment
League Initiative

This CDI initiative focuses on compiling an inventory of local social
development needs, prioritizing them through an open and user-driven
model that requires the active civic engagement of the residents of
targeted neighborhoods.
Possible New Initiatives
The Pathways Mapping Initiative Study

CDI may assist the Concho Valley Family Alliance develop a pathways mapping
approach to child abuse prevention. The pathways mapping method for
coordinating and measuring prevention services originated in Harvard’s Family
Research Project.
The San Angelo Ministerial Alliance (SMA)
Initiative

CDI may work with the SMA to form a community-based partnership to
develop a faith-based transitional housing project for former prisoners
returning to the community.
West Texas Community Reinvesting in
Educational Opportunities (CREO)

CDI is seeking ways to work with CREO to help the organization achieve
its goal to promote access and opportunity for disadvantaged and at risk
students in higher education.
Local History of the NAACP
___________________________________________________________
CDI is working on arrangements to collaborate with the NAACP, the ASU
History Department, and The West Texas Collection at ASU to produce a
history of the local chapter of the NAACP.
CDI Journal
__________________________________________________________________
The journal will publish cutting-edge research and theory in all areas of
community development. Contributions will demonstrate the highest standards
of excellence while developing theoretical, conceptual, or methodological
approaches to the study of issues in community development.
The Future: The Need for CREED

 What is CREED? CREED is a proposed Center for Community Research,
Engagement, Evaluation, and Development.
 Why CREED?
 The ASU CDI program is rapidly reaching its capacity to implement programs.
 To address the positive community response to CDI programs.
 The CREED Mission: To serve as an institutional hub to integrate teaching,
research, and service into a focused learning-centered portfolio of community
anchored activities that promote responsible citizenship and productive
contribution.
