Blue Flag Iris Iris versicolor
This perennial is found in
meadows and in moist soil. It has
sword-like leaves and violet-blue
flowers with prominent veins.
Many Native American tribes used
the iris medicinally. The root was
made into a poultice and used to
treat swellings, sores, bruises,
rheumatism, and as an analgesic
agent. A tea made of the root was
used as a laxative, an emetic, and
to stimulate bile flow. The plant
has also been used as a bowel,
liver, and kidney stimulant, as well
as for migraine relief.
