Size
• The hairy leafed apitong is a medium to
large size tree
• It is usually 30 – 40 m tall
• Leaves generally don’t appear until 20
m up the trunk of a full grown adult tree
• Trunk is approximately 150 cm in
diameter

• Grows at altitudes of 200-600 m
• Likes to grow near rivers
Flowers & Leaves
• Flowers are usually
white with a pink,
purple or red stripe
down the center
• Leaves have a
length of 3 - 4.5 cm
• Leaves are green
and have an
elliptical-oblong
shape
Seeds
• The tree produces 130-500 seeds per
kg
• They are of a spherical shape with two
leaves attached
• This allows the seeds to “helicopter” to
their destination
Uses
• Next to teak, the Yang-Na is
the most important timber
tree in Thailand
• Also important for its
oleoresin production, used
in paint, varnish, and lacquer
• The oil from the tree is used
as a fixative in perfumes
• The taungya reforestation
method in Thailand uses the
hairy-leafed apitong to
rehabilitate wasteland, as
the organic matter and NPK
(nitrogen, phosphorus, and
potassium) content are
higher in soils under this
tree
