What Conditions
affect the Water
Cycle?
Unit D * Chapter 11 * Section

Pages 342-347
Objectives
Describe the stages of the water
cycle.
Describe how the water cycle
relates to weather.
The water cycle has
processes
• Evaporation
• Condensation
• Precipitation
Evaporation
• The sun dries up a puddle
of water by making it “sweat”.
• The “sweat” is called
water vapor.
• Water vapor is water in the
form of a gas.
• Evaporation is the process
of water turning from liquid
to gas.
• Most of the time, we cannot see evaporation!
Condensation
• Once water vapor in
the air becomes cold, it
changes back into liquid
and forms clouds.
• This is called condensation.
Experiment with
condensation!
On a warm day pour a
cold glass of water and
watch what happens.
The water that forms on
the outside of the glass is
the product of condensation!
Humidity
• The amount of water vapor in the air
Precipitation
• When so much water has
condensed that the air can no
longer hold it, it becomes
precipitation.
• Precipitation is water falling
back onto to the earth.
• Examples include:
rain, sleet, snow, and hail
Then the water cycle starts all
over again!

Our world uses the same
water over and over again by
moving it around in a process
called the water cycle.
All Living Organisms Need Water
Water can land on the ground
and be used by plants, animals,
and people.
Go and get a glass of water.
What do you know
about this glass of water?
Where did the water come from?
Could this dinosaur have had
some of the water in this glass
at one time?
The same water you
play with in the summer…
has been around for
years and years !
Prehistoric animals
shared your water
millions of years
ago!
Kings, queens, knights
and princesses used the
same water in their wells.
Fresh water is a limited resource that
people need to conserve and keep clean!
Factors that affect the
water cycle
• Distance from
the equator
• Shape of the land
• Landforms
