Abstract
This presentation gives an overview of wireless access from its origins to current
developments. Emphasis is made on the peculiarities of the use of the radiofrequency
spectrum and the additional flexibility that it provides to enable fixed, mobile and
nomadic wireless access applications. Broadband wireless access is also addressed,
including radio local area networks, wireless metropolitan area networks, and the
ongoing development of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT-2000). The
presentation concludes by highlighting trends towards convergence of fixed, mobile, and
broadcasting (terrestrial and satellite) radiocommunication services. References to
relevant ITU-R Recommendations and handbooks are also included.
