Pharmacolog AB is a medical device company based in
Uppsala, Sweden. The company specializes in providing
quality assurance solutions for safe administration of
medical IV drugs. The long term vision for the company
is to play an active role in developing adaptive treatment
methods with IV drugs.
Pharmacolog AB has developed a system that can prevent
errors in drug administration.
The company’s lead product, DrugLog®, focuses on the
quality assurance in IV drug administration at the hospital
pharmacy and clinical wards.
THE SOLUTION
DrugLog® is a combination of hardware and software
that through a patented process can identify the drug
being prepared and verify its concentration, prior to
patient infusion.
The method reduces the risk of errors in drug
management and the associated consequences for
patients and clinical personnel (liability).
PREPARATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF DRUGS
In most hospitals the reconstitution and preparation of
complex drugs takes place in centralized units typically
in a controlled environment with experienced staff.
The preparation and administration of toxic drugs is
sometimes complex and the risk of errors and system
failures could result in harmful outcome for the patient.
Therefore extra measures need to be taken to ensure
patient safety and prevent medication errors. Quality
assurance systems are essential in order to dispense
safe and accurate medications. These systems are
becoming more widely used, however DrugLog provides
real qualitative and quantitative testing that provides
additional security for patients and staff.
THE DrugLog® TECHNOLOGY
The core technology is based on absorption spectroscopy
in the ultraviolet (UV) and visual spectral range. In order
to identify the drug to be tested a broad band spectral
analysis of the liquid sample is made and matched against
stored reference spectral data for calibrated drugs. Each
drug to be compounded at a drug preparation unit shall
be calibrated in advance and stored in the system as a
reference. In this way generic drugs differences in spectral
response can be identified which is used to automatically
identify an accurate product. DrugLog® has been tested
and verified at hospital pharmacies in Sweden and
Switzerland preparing cytostatic drugs as well as insulin,
morphine and different antibiotics for treatment of cancer
patients.
SYSTEM INTEGRATION
DrugLog® has a built-in computer that can be connected
to local networks for integrating with existing patient,
treatment, drug prescription records, and other related
databases.
The system is connected to internet via the local Wi-Fi
network which enables remote service and support by
Pharmacolog.
The CEO of the company is Hans Dahlin, with a clinical and company
leadership background in cancer care for more than 30 years.
WHY PHARMACOLOG
”After 30 years in clinical work, research and companies
focused on developing methods and solutions for better
cancer care with radiotherapy, I realized in early 2000
that to achieve an overall better and more individualized
treatment of cancer, other disciplines like chemotherapy
had to be improved. Research showed considerable
lack of accuracy and safety when treating patients with
intravenous drugs, which very often also resulted in
serious mistreatments, patient suffering and substantial
costs for the society.
Several technical innovations and clinical tests made it
possible to establish the company Pharmacolog in 2007.
The business idea for Pharmacolog was to develop a
product based on spectroscopic technology for securing
treatment with intravenous drugs so that the right drug,
with the right concentration, is given at the right time and
to the right patient.
Now Pharmacolog can present a stable and userfriendly first product to the market. DrugLog can play an
important role in preventing mistreatments and patient
sufferings, which directly improve the life for patients,
and will decrease healthcare costs.
Pharmacolog’s long-term goal is to continue the mission
to develop tools and methods together with research
centers, other MedTech and Drug companies, to make
planning of IV drugs and follow up for individualized
