THE FACE OF HEALTHCARE’S FUTURE
2014 NORTH SHORE-LIJ ANNUAL REPORT
N O RT H S H O R E - L I J
2
Dear Friends:
At North Shore-LIJ, improving the patient experience is our goal each and every day. It is a
responsibility that our 54,000 plus employees welcome and take extremely seriously. Equal
parts rewarding, demanding and life-changing — our healthcare vocations challenge us and
make us proud.
We believe our employees and volunteers are both the face and future of healthcare. They
are innovators, leaders, healers and caretakers. Their work touches patients and families and
reaches across generations. Today, more than ever before, their actions have national and
international implications. Illnesses like Ebola, for example, once thought to be a problem an
ocean and continent away, have tested our capability to respond to a previously unexpected
threat within a matter of hours.
We are tested in other ways as well.
The introduction of a new payment model, greater emphasis on population health
management and a more diversified business approach — including providing health
insurance and exploring new medical ventures — requires an adaptability and expertise that
has created both opportunity and pressure unlike any we have seen before. Coupled with our
growth and expansion to Brooklyn, Westchester and beyond, these factors will challenge our
ability and resolve to view the opportunities presented to us in a new light.
For all the modern healthcare realities we face, we turn to our employees, volunteers and
supporters to lead the way. They show what is possible now and how it will leave a lasting
impact tomorrow. Significant and generous investments in our health system made by
our closest philanthropic partners — such as those featured in this report — help fuel the
innovative models we develop that set us apart. The lives our employees and volunteers
touch and the difference they make through their work is eternal and truly unmatched by
any other industry.
Mahatma Gandhi encouraged us to be the change we wished to see in the world. It is not an
exaggeration to say that our employees’ work together is doing just that. They are changing
the world and turning our collective wish of better health into a reality for all.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Dowling

Thanks to commitments from our dedicated friends and generous
supporters, North Shore-LIJ Health System received $71 million in
donations last year. Our entire staff is dedicated to the health system’s
commitment to excellence, quality, compassion and improving the
health of the community, and works tirelessly every day to make it a
reality for our patients.
With the help of our donors, our passion is translated into outstanding
care and groundbreaking research. Support from individuals, families,
corporations and foundations helps ensure that we can continue our
clinical programs and research, and that we can uphold our promise of
providing exceptional care to the community we serve.
The steadfast partners and their families highlighted on the pages
to follow are among our valued supporters, whose investments
have helped North Shore-LIJ to become one of the most advanced,
innovative healthcare systems in the nation.

THE BOHLSEN FAMILY
The Bohlsen family — John, Linda and sons Michael
and Kurt — continues their support of North ShoreLIJ’s mission to the communities it serves and their
long-standing commitment to the transformation
of the Southside Hospital campus, with a significant
investment to support its new Emergency Department
— one of the busiest in Suffolk County. Serving an
expanding, active and maturing resident population,
Southside’s Emergency Department now averages
70,000 annual visits, within a space originally designed
for 18,000 visits.
The Bohlsens are motivated to give back, following
North Shore-LIJ’s commitment to expand and elevate
Southside from a local community hospital to a
tertiary hospital with a renowned cardiac surgery
program. The family’s dedication to meet the
healthcare needs of local residents coupled with their
continued commitment to philanthropy will ensure
exceptional healthcare for future generations.

THE MACK FAMILY
Philanthropists Phyllis and William Mack
have been friends and benefactors of
North Shore-LIJ for more than 40 years.
The generosity shown by the Macks — for
whom the main Lenox Hill HealthPlex
pavilion is named — places them at the
forefront of the health system’s most
transformative supporters by directing
their philanthropy towards impactful,
mission-critical initiatives.
Lenox Hill HealthPlex brings state-ofthe-art, 24/7 integrated emergency care
and health and wellness services to better
address the total health needs of residents
in downtown Manhattan — an area left
vulnerable with the closing of St. Vincent’s
Hospital in 2010.

of all ages through her impactful generosity. Her latest
gift will help to create and name the Sandra Atlas Bass
Center for Liver Diseases, which will provide advanced,
compassionate care to patients in a pleasant, convenient
outpatient location.
Ms. Bass’ legacy can be seen and felt in nearly every corner
of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, including Cohen

care expertise. The initiative — the only
one in New York State — uses audio/ visual
equipment and proprietary software from a
remote location to support bedside staff.
• LIJ Medical Center designs a new emergency
room experience that emphasizes decreased wait
times and improved efficiency without sacrificing
expert care. As part of the process, patients are
greeted and registered when they arrive, a chart
is created, an RN assesses patients and assigns an
acuity level to triage patients based on the severity
of their illness or injuries, and issues them an ED
Care Card so that both the patient and the medical
team can track the time spent in the ED and any
tests that are ordered, pending or completed.
• CirrusHealth, a patient-centered, transitionof-care platform developed by the Lenox Hill
Hospital neurosurgical team, receives an
honorable mention for “Most Innovative”
patient education submission in the nationwide
Box and Dignity Health Patient Education

one of the few in the New York area — with
a cath lab dedicated exclusively to diagnosing
and treating cardiac conditions in children.
• North Shore University Hospital is the
first hospital on Long Island — and only the
fourth in the country — to offer a new heart
failure monitoring system. The CardioMEMS
device is a miniaturized, wireless sensor that
helps heart failure patients better monitor
their condition and avoid hospitalizations.
• Lenox Hill Hospital is the first hospital in
Manhattan to implant a new insertable cardiac
monitor, the smallest implantable cardiac
monitoring device currently available.
• Southside Hospital is the first hospital in
Suffolk County to implant a new defibrillator
that protects against sudden cardiac arrest. The
new device treats dangerously rapid heartbeats
without touching the patient’s heart or blood
vessels, offering a lower risk of infection while
providing protection. Physicians at LIJ Medical
Center begin using the device later in the year.
• North Shore University Hospital upgrades
its robot-assisted surgical program with the
addition of daVinci Xi technology, which
allows hospital surgeons to perform minimally
invasive operations with greater dexterity
and precision. The hospital is one of only
three sites in the New York region offering
the latest version of the surgical robot.
