What is Erste Campus?
“As a leading bank in Central and Eastern
Europe, we are now also geographically
oriented towards these countries with our new
headquarters. At the same time though, we
remain loyal to our heritage as a traditional
Austrian bank,” explained Andreas Treichl,
CEO of Erste Group.
Erste Campus is the new headquarters of Erste Group Bank AG, Erste Bank
Oesterreich and its subsidiaries in Austria. It is built on the site of the former
Südbahnhof (Southern Railway Station) and is the first major construction project to
be completed in “Quartier Belvedere”. The new district of Quartier Belvedere will
feature an urban mix of office and residential buildings, green areas and cultural
establishments, museums, shops and restaurants.
Erste Group is one of the leading financial service providers in Central and Eastern
Europe. The site of the former railway station was not chosen as the location for
Erste Campus by mere chance. In the imperial era, the Südbahnhof train station was
considered a gateway to the countries situated in the south, north and east of the
monarchy. Erste Campus is located right next to the newly built Central Train Station
and has excellent connections to the public transport network of the city of Vienna
(subway line 1, several tram and bus lines as well as local trains), the Austrian
Railways as well as a direct line to Vienna International Airport.
From the laying of the cornerstone for Erste Campus on 26th June 2012, some 1,000
workers from over 100 firms worked daily on the enormous construction site –
roughly the size of three football fields – to build Erste Campus. During construction,
work contracts were awarded to many small and medium-sized local firms.
Why are we building Erste Campus?
The primary motivation to build Erste Campus was economical with the intention of
bringing together all of the more than 20 sites of Erste Group located throughout the
entire city of Vienna to one location. The divergent quality of the buildings and offices
of the current locations together with the enormous investment costs that would
have been required to upgrade the infrastructure would have posed a daily
challenge to any modern company aiming for flexible collaboration and smooth
communication. Erste Campus has been designed to make better use of synergies
and offer employees workspaces in line with the latest technology standards. Erste
Campus will also help lower overhead costs by around 20%.
The building that houses the former main office of Erste Group located Am Graben in
the centre of Vienna will be preserved as a historic building of Erste Group. Erste
Campus will not change Erste Group's philosophy of personalised and individual
support to customers. On the contrary, the open and welcoming architecture reflects
the principles that guide us in serving our customers and focusing on customers'
needs.

How are we building?
Sustainability is a key theme in the construction of
Erste Campus. Already during construction work,
Erste Group relied 100% on green electricity and
worked to obtain the certificate of Österreichische
Gesellschaft für Nachhaltige Immobilienwirtschaft (ÖGNI) (Austrian Sustainable Building
Council). In December 2012, it was awarded the
pre-assessment certificate in "PLATIN". During
the construction phase, care was taken to ensure
that the statutory limits for dust and noise pollution
were not exceeded. The building is barrier-free throughout and guarantees physical
access for persons with physical impairments.

that can be opened

Energy recovery from elevator systems
Measures to lower annual primary energy consumption
Who are the architects?
The tender for the architectural design was held in
2007 by placing ads in several newspapers and
architecture platforms in around 30 European
countries. Key criteria for the tender included the
dynamic and harmonic combination of architecture,
user-friendliness, efficiency and ecological
sustainability. More than 200 architects registered for
the competition and 14 teams were invited to present © Henke Schreieck Architekten
detailed tenders. In September 2008, after a fourstage selection procedure, the international jury under the leadership of András
Pálffy, the president of Wiener Secession, awarded the project to the team of
architects from Vienna, Hencke and Schreieck.
The duo has realized several successful projects including the Park Hotel in
Hall/Tirol, the office buildings HOCH ZWEI and RUND VIER in Vienna, the Borealis
Innovation Headquarters in Linz and the Technical College (Fachhochschule)
Kufstein. Marta Schreieck and Dieter Henke have won prizes from the city of Vienna,
the Adolf Loos Architecture Award, the Piranesi Architecture Award, ZV Builders
Award and distinctions for “Neues Bauen” (contemporary architecture) in the Alps.
"Our vision for Erste Campus was to create a place that fosters company loyalty, with
a transparent design that is open towards the city and fits smoothly into its
surroundings and also livens up and upgrades the district and offers the best of
workplaces for all employees", explained Marta Schreieck.
New customer advisory centre
at Erste Campus
An open architecture, digital information
displays and the welcoming George Cafe in the
immediate vicinity – at the new Erste Campus
on the site of the Quartier Belvedere: After the
successful start of the new branch office
concept with the opening of the Floridsdorf
advisory center and 12 service branch offices in
highly frequented locations, the second large
advisory center is now opening directly at the
new Erste Bank headquarters at Vienna's
Central Railway Station.
The 1,100 m2 advisory center has been
conceived and designed in line with the wishes
of customers. “The advisory center was built
around the customer in the very heart of Erste
Bank, our new campus. With that the location is
playing a very special role”, says Thomas
Schaufler, chief retail officer of Erste Bank. The
team of 30 Erste Bank advisors at the center
places personal contact with customers at the
heart of its services – depending on
requirements either in an informal or a discreet
setting.
Erste Bank is the first point of contact for startups demonstrates this with an innovatively
designed competence center – the Start-Up
Center (Gruender Center), a meeting place for
young entrepreneurs. The Start-up Centre
Team provides advice on business concepts,
financing options and financial assistance
schemes. The start-ups also benefit from a
network of lawyers, tax advisors and other
professionals.
