ASTROLOGY
A graded stakes winner at two, and a classic performer at three, Astrology is an A.P. Indy son
bred on an identical cross to Bernardini.
Using Bernardini as a guide, we can see that he has made a very good start with mares from
the Northern Dancer line. He has grade one winners To Honor and Serve and Angela Renee
out of mares by Deputy Minister, and he also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Deputy
Minister son, Dehere. The Deputy Minister strain might also be introduced through Silver
Deputy, Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper), Touch Gold, Salt Lake, French Deputy and
Forest Camp. Bernardini is also showing a distinct affinity for the Storm Bird branch of
Northern Dancer. His Travers Stakes (gr. I) winner, Stay Thirsty, is out of a mare by Storm
Bird himself, and his graded winners Theyskens’ Theory and Buffum are respectively from
mares by Storm Bird sons Summer Squall (a half-brother to A.P. Indy) and Storm Cat.
Considering sons of Storm Cat, Bernardini has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Tale
of the Cat and stakes winners from daughters of Forestry and Exploit, and other Storm Cat
sons to provide the dams of A.P. Indy stakes winners include Bernstein, Cat Thief, Catienus,
Forest Wildcat, Giant’s Causeway and his brother Freud, Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg
and Henny Hughes, and grandsire of Scat Daddy), Menifee (by Harlan, sire of Harlan’s
Holiday), Sir Cat and Storm Boot, and it could also be worth trying Stormy Atlantic and
Stormin Fever, who are both out of mares by A.P. Indy’s grandsire, Seattle Slew.
Bernardini’s second Travers Stakes winner (gr.I), Alpha is out of a mare descending from the
Northern Dancer through Nijinsky II (sire of Royal Academy, Sky Classic and Shadeed, and
grandsire of Strawberry Road and Alydeed). From other branches of the Northern Dancer,
Bernardini has a stakes winner out of a mare by Galileo (by Sadler’s Wells, who would also
be attractive through El Prado and his sons Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller);
and a grade one winner out of a mare by Danehill, a son of Danzig, a strain that could also
be introduced through Chief’s Crown, Boundary, Dayjur, Danzig Connection, Belong to Me,
Langfuhr, Hard Spun, War Front, War Chant and Honor Grades (a half-brother to A.P. Indy);
and a grade one winner out of a mare Lyphard.
Northern Dancer Is a three-quarters relative to Icecapade, and from that branch of the
Nearctic line, Bernardini is sire of graded stakes winner Le Barnardin out of a mare by Wild
Again, and graded stakes winner Imperative out of a mare by Caller I.D. from the Phone
Trick/Clever Trick branch of Icecapade.
Bernardini has also enjoyed an extremely profitable relationship with mares from the Mr.
Prospector line. From daughters of Carson City, he is sire of four stakes winners, including
the grade one winning A Z Warrior, and the very talented graded two scorer Wilburn, and

this strain can be brought in through City Zip, Lord Carson, Cuvee, Five Star Day, Flying
Chevron, Good and Tough and Pollard’s Vision. Bernardini is sire of grade two winner
Gamilati out of a mare by Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid, who would give inbreeding
to A.P. Indy and a three-parts-sister), and his stakes winning and grade one placed daughter
R Gypsy Gold is out of a mare by Seeking the Gold (sire of Petionville, Mutakddim, and Cape
Town). Astrology already carries the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector through Quiet
American, but it could be worth duplicating this strain via Rubiano, Unbridled, Unbridled’s
Song, Cryptoclearance (broodmare sire of a Bernardini’s undefeated graded stakes winner
Algorithms, as well as being sire of Victory Gallop, and grandsire of Candy Ride), Broken
Vow, Empire Maker, Grindstone and Birdstone. There are also a Bernardini stakes winners
out of mares by Gone West (sire of Mr. Greeley, Elusive Quality, Grand Slam, Speightstown
and Proud Citizen), Woodman and Smart Strike. It would also be worth considering
introducing the Mr. Prospector strain through Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry), Forty Niner
(particularly Distorted Humor), Afleet (sire of Northern Afleet, grandsire of Afleet Alex),
Fusaichi Pegasus and Silver Ghost. There are also four grade one winners by A.P. Indy and
his sons out of mares from the male line of Alydar, a genetic relative to Mr. Prospector, who
could be brought in through Saratoga Six, Turkoman, Criminal Type, Alysheba, Easy Goer
and Strike the Gold.
Astrology’s broodmare sire, Quiet American is inbred to Dr. Fager, a son of Rough ‘n
Tumble, and this strain works very well with In Reality, who is out of Champion My Dear
Girl, the outstanding daughter of Rough ‘n Tumble. A.P. Indy has also crossed successfully
over In Reality via Relaunch (who can be introduced through Honour and Glory, Skywalker,
Bertrando, Officer, Cee’s Tizzy and Tiznow) and Valid Appeal, whose sons include
Successful Appeal (sire of a two-year-old multiple graded stakes winning two-year-old out of
the dam of Astrology), Valid Expectations and Valid Wager.
We can also note that Astrology’s dam has bred two stakes winners by Yes It’s True, a son of
Is It’s True, and himself sire of Proud Accolade.
