The artists at Rogers have been enjoying the
warm weather and spring fever is taking
over the art room. With the end of February
came the last of the winter art while March
brought in fresh spring projects. April will
bring recycled/environmental art for some
grades. Stay tuned for new projects!

In the Art Room
Busy! Busy! Busy! We have been very busy in the art room studying new artists,
learning new techniques, talking about color theory, drawing, painting, and problem
solving! I emphasize problem solving because so many artists in our classes strive for
perfection on the first try. We are learning how to handle mistakes – sometimes they
become “happy accidents” and other times they end up starting over. Either way,
students are actively learning. The overall process is what I have been emphasizing as
we work through the various assignments. We all start at the same point whether it is
learning a new technique or studying a new artist. We have an end point in mind (the
assignment) and the middle “work” is where the bulk of our problem solving skills are
tested and growing this year. I consistently say, “We are artists so we are problem
solvers.” The idea of problem solving is what helps build a growth mindset and
develops creative thinking skills in all areas of our lives.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. I am at school Monday
through Thursday and can be reached at [email protected] or

Mondrian
Using a straight edge
(ruler), artists created at
least 10 rectangles on a
paper. They then used
black crayons to create a
wax resist and painted
the squares using
tempera in primary
colors, black, and white.
1st The Connoisseur
Norman Rockwell painted
an image of himself
observing a Jackson
Pollock painting. Artists
used marbles to create an
“action painting” and
finished the image in the
style of Rockwell.
2nd Notan
After completing our
Alexander Calderinspired mobiles, second
grade artists have begun
working on Notan, a
Japanese style of art
based on paper cutting to
emphasize positive and
negative space.
3rd Pop Art
Artists have just
completed their Wayne
Thiebaud-inspired cakes
that focus on drawing
and shading cylinders.
This week we started our
Keith Haring dancing
people.
4th Op Art
Using line and shading
techniques, artists are
creating the optical
illusion of a hand coming
off the page.
5th Ringgold/Repoussé
Artists will be embossing
a memory on copper foil.
This will become the
centerpiece to their
“story quilt” that will be
finished with fabric and
oil pastels.
