An Introduction to Islam
Dennis Wholley meets Imam Hassan Qazwini, leader of the Islamic Centre in Dearborn,
Michigan, to discuss the fundamental beliefs of Islam, and remove any misconceptions the
general public may have. Many non-muslims have the idea that the Islamic clerics and leaders
are hostile and unapproachable, however Dennis Wholley shows that the Islamic leaders
(Imams) are normal people like you and I, striving for a better future for upcoming generations.
Imam Qazwini starts the conversation by talking about the meaning of the terms "Islam" which
is translated to mean "Submission", and "Muslim" which is translated to mean "One who
submits". Qazwini then goes on and gives an example of Prophet Abraham(pbuh), in which the
Quran states was a Muslim, in the sense that he submitted himself totally to the way of God
when sacrificing his son Ishmael (or Isaac according to the Jews).
Hassan Qazwini then goes on to talk about 5 fundamental principles in both sects of Islam (Shia
and Sunni), which are "Shahada"(Declaration of the Oneness of God, and that Mohammed is
God's last messenger), Prayer, Fasting, Charity and Hajj. Imam Qazwini then gives Islamic Perspective on 3 predominant issues which arise between
inter-faith debates, these are: Creation of God, Sources of Good and Evil in the world and
Heaven/Hell.
Qazwini finally concludes the discussion by condemning the people who have "hi-jacked" Islam,
and use it to their own personal benefit and gain.
