What is a thunderstorm, flood lightning and how
does it form?
A thunderstorm is a storm with thunder and
lightning and typically includes heavy rainfall. A
flood is when an overflowing of a large amount of
water beyond its normal confines, especially over
what is normally dry land. Lightning is a natural
electrical discharge of very short duration and high
voltage between a cloud and the ground or within
a cloud.
Where and when can a thunderstorm, flood or
lightning occur?
Thunderstorms can occur year-round and at all
hours. But they are most likely to happen in the
spring and summer months during the afternoon
and evening hours. Thunderstorms are typically
associated with rain, and if it stays too long, it will
eventually flood.
How are thunderstorms, floods or lightning
measured, detected or forecasted
Meteorologists often rely on massive computer programs called numerical weather
prediction models to help them decide if conditions will be right for the development of
thunderstorms. These models are designed to calculate what the atmosphere will do at
certain points over a large area, from the Earth's surface to the top of the atmosphere.
Data is gathered from weather balloons launched around the globe twice each day, in
addition to measurements from satellites, aircraft, ships, temperature profilers and
surface weather stations. The models start with these current weather observations and
attempt to predict future weather using physics and dynamics to mathematically describe
the atmosphere's behavior. The predictions are usually output in text and graphics
(mostly) maps).
What kind of damage can a thunderstorm, flood
or lightning create?
Many hazardous weather events are associated with
thunderstorms. Under the right conditions, rainfall from
thunderstorms causes flash flooding, killing more people each year
than hurricanes, tornadoes or lightning. Lightning is responsible for
many fires around the world each year, and causes fatalities. Hail
up to the size of softballs damages cars and windows, and kills
livestock caught out in the open. Strong (up to more than 120 mph)
straight-line winds associated with thunderstorms knock down trees,
power lines and mobile homes. Tornadoes (with winds up to about
300 mph) can destroy all but the best-built man-made structures.
How can people keep safe from a
thunderstorm, flood or lightning?
In case of flooding, you should stay out of
areas that may be subject to flooding. If
outdoors, climb to high ground. If you reach
water, turn around immediately. In case of
lightning stay away from silver or metal and
also trees.
Name some important things to put in a
thunderstorm, flood, or lightning disaster kit.
For a thunderstorm, lightning, and flood kit, you might
need the things. You will need a portable battery powered
radio or t.v., a flashlight with extra batteries, first aid kit and
first aid manual, credit card and cash, personal
identification, extra set of car keys, matches in a
waterproof container, a signal flare, map of the area, phone
numbers where you want to go, and if you have any,
special needs, such as medication pills, diapers and
formula, etcetera.
What is the difference between a thunderstorm,
flood or lightening watch and a thunderstorm,
flood or lightning warning?
The difference is the word “watch” and
“warning”. If there is a weather watch, it means
that meteorologists are watching the upcoming
weather. A warning means that you should
prepare for the upcoming severe weather.
Why is it important to study severe weather?
It is important to study severe weather
because it is a big threat to our country. It is
also important so we know when the severe
weather is going to hit.
Are thunderstorms, floods or lightening
a serious threat to our state? Why?
Thunderstorms,Floods, and lightning are
a threat to our state. The reason why is
because we could be in danger. Fires could
happen, and a lot of damage. Floods can
damage houses across the state and people
could get injured
