Anatomical Planes of the Body Body Planes Medical professionals often refer to sections of the body in terms of anatomical planes (flat surfaces). These planes are imaginary lines – vertical or horizontal – drawn through an upright body. The terms are used to describe a specific body part. Coronal – front and back Sagittal – left and right Transverse – top and bottom Anatomical Terms Medial Lateral Proximal Distal Inferior Superior Cephalad or Cranial Caudal or Caudad Anterior Posterior Dorsal Ventral Direction Toward the midline of the body Away from the midline of the body Toward a reference point (extremity) Away from a reference point (extremity) Lower or below Upper or above Head Tail, tail end Toward the front Toward the back Posterior Anterior
