This course studies Shakespeare on the page and on the stage. We spend two weeks
reading at Rutgers, and then move to England to see these plays performed on the stages
of the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeare’s Birthplace)
and the Globe Theatre in London. In London, we will visit such theatrical sites as the
new Sam Wanamaker Playhouse (a replica of the original indoor theater) and the
archaeological site of the Rose Theatre, where they perform Christopher Marlowe’s
plays, as well as other dramatic venues in London. In Stratford and in London, we will
explore the major sites associated with Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and study
with actors, directors, and scholars associated with the major centers for Shakespearean
studies and performance. Attention will be given to Shakespeare’s cultural context and
contemporaries, stage interpretation, and the challenges of production and performance.
