1­2 Solve Multi­Step Equations
Objective: Solve for an unknown value by performing math operations to solve for the given variable.
Steps to solve equations:
1. Simplify the equation on each side of the = sign (if needed this includes performing the distributive property)
2. Get all variables on 1 side of the equal sign (do this by adding or subtracting one of the variables across the =)
3. "Undo" any addition or subtraction on the side of the equation with the variable
4. "Undo" any division involving the variable
5. "Undo" any multiplication involving the variable
*** Remember there are always exceptions to these rules and their order***
Examples:
a.) 3y + 2 = 11
b.) 1/4 x ­ 2 = 3
c.) 3x + 5x + 4 + 7 = 88 + x
d.) 6x + 5 = 2 + 5x + 8

e.) ­20y + 15 = 2 ­ 16y + 11
f.) 3x + 10.5 = 6.5 + 2.5x
g.) 4(2a + 3) = ­3(a ­ 1) + 31
h.) ½ x ­ 3 = 2 ­ ¾ x

i.) ½(2 + x) = 3x + 4 32
j.) 0.4x ­ 0.25 = 1.75
k.) 1/4 (a + 3) = 2 ­ a
l.) 3z + 5 + 2z = 12 + 4z
