POLICY FOR DEALING WITH SICK CHILDREN/ INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Aim

To prevent the introduction of infectious diseases into nursery and control the
spread of infection.
Objective

To protect young children and staff from contracting infectious diseases.

To work with staff and parents in developing an awareness of infectious diseases.

To promote and maintain a healthy facility. Children who are ill will not be allowed
into the nursery.
Policy
When a child becomes ill at our nursery our policy is to send the child home to ensure the
child has his/her needs met in the most appropriate setting and to protect other children
and adults from the risk of infection.
All decisions will be taken based on the signs and symptoms displayed by the individual
child with back up and advice given to the parent if necessary using guidelines issued by:
The Communicable Disease Control Manual issued by the Health England
Procedure for Dealing with Sick Children





Any member of staff suspecting a child is unwell or contagious must report this to
the manager.
A member of staff (preferably the child’s key worker) will make sure the child is as
comfortable as possible.
The person in charge will telephone the parents/carers first to collect their child from
the nursery; if contact cannot be made other emergency contact numbers will be
tried.
If parents/carers or emergency contact numbers cannot be contacted one member
of staff will care for the child until the end of the session.
Parents will always be advised to seek the advice of a medical practitioner.

The nursery has a responsibility to inform Ofsted if we believe a child is suffering
from a notifiable disease as such in Public Health Regulations 1988.

Where staff are concerned about a child’s condition deteriorating e.g. suspected
meningitis, they will take the child directly to hospital taking with them any notes
about allergies and medication and seek medical guidance. They will act in ‘loco
parentis’ until a parent arrives.

Parents/carers are required to attend the hospital.
