Objective 2: Vocabulary Definitions
Volcano: A landform created when magma rises to the surface through a “weak spot.”
Magma: Rock beneath the surface that has melted.
Lava: Magma (melted rock) that is on the surface.
Ring of Fire: The area around the Pacific Ocean basin in which 60% of volcanoes are
located.
Island Arc: The pieces of land created when two pieces of oceanic crust collide, creating
a string of volcanoes.
Hot Spot: A stationary tube of magma that rises to the surface creating land, etc. as
the plate moves over it.
