Roman Republican Era/The Era in which Rome was ruled by the Senate and its assembly.
Patrician/Any member of a group of citizen families who formed the “privileged class” in early Rome.
Plebeian/The part of the Roman population whose origin was among the conquered nations.
Atriums/The townhouses with central courtyards that the Patricians lived in.
Insulae/The three or four story apartment houses that the Plebeians lived in.
Naturalistic Art/The type artwork that closely resembles forms of the “natural” world….
Colosseum/Considered one of the most important pieces of art and architecture during the time of the
Roman Empire.
Vespasian/The construction of the Coliseum began with this Flavian Emperor…
Flavian/The Roman Emperors who were originally of Italian “Elite”, but not of Roman decent.
Gladiators/The criminals, slaves, and prisoners of war who had lost their citizenship rights and forced to

De Oratorio/A book meant to instruct Roman Orators, in order to create more effective Orators in the
Ludus, and Grammaticus.
Institutio Oratoria/Quintilian’s theory on rhetoric and pedagogy, compiled in twelve separate books.
