WORLD RELIGIONS

Period 4B
CHRISTIANITY
*Christianity began as a Jewish sect in the first
century. It is based on the life, teachings, and
death of Jesus Christ.
*It is a monotheistic religion
*More popular in the west.
*Christians believe that Jesus will return to
judge all humans, living and dead. He will also
grant eternal life to his followers. They believe
he suffered, died, was buried, and was
resurrected in order to grant eternal life to
those who believe in him and trust him.
*Their holy book is the bible
*Their key figures is the Trinity which is the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
*Some unique things about this religion are
baptism, sacrament, and resurrection.
*Their key holidays are Easter and Christmas.
ISLAM
*Islam religion was founded in the middle east in the 7 th
century; it is based on the teachings of Muhammad.
*It is a monotheistic religion
*More popular in south Asia
*People of this religion believe that God is one and
incomparable. They also believe that the purpose of
existence is to love and serve god. They believe the
Qur’an is unaltered and is the final revelation of God.
*Their holy book is the Qur’an.
*One of their key individuals is Muhammad and Allah is
their God.
*Some things that make this religion unique are: they do
not believe in the Trinity, they are not expected to
visualize God. They pray 5 times a day. They also have a
dress code and can marry up to 4 women.
*Some of their holy days and holidays include: Eid alFitr, Shawwal, Ramadan, and Dhu al-Hijjah.
JUDAISM
*Judaism is the expression of the covenantal
relationship God established with the children of Israel.
It was founded by Abraham about 4,000 years ago.
*Judaism is monotheistic.
*Most prevalent in Israel
*They believe in the Torah (laws given to the Israelites at
Sinai), they must follow God’s laws which govern their
daily life. They also believe in the Ten Commandments
that are written in the Torah.
*Their holy texts include the Tenkah, Torah, and
Talmud.
*Some of their key individuals include Abraham, Moses,
and Jesus or Nazareth.
*Some unique aspects of this religion are that Judaism
has no doctoral requirements for membership, “Jewish”
can be described as a race and culture rather than a
religion.
*Some of their holy days and holidays are Passover,
Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Hanukkah, and
Purim.
HINDUISM
*Hinduism is distinct intellectual or philosophical points
of view. Some people believe that Hinduism has always
existed and has no founder.
*It is polytheistic
*More popular in India
*People of this religion believe in Samsara, Karma (the
belief that ones actions affects everything about their
life), and Cosmos. They have a Hindu Trinity which
includes Brahman, Vishnu, and Shiva.
*Their holy texts are Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita,
and Epics.
*This religion has no key figures
*Unique things about this religion is they have no
specific monument, don’t know how the religion
originated, and there are no certain beliefs you must
follow.
*It has been said that this religion has a holiday for
everyday of the year. A Hindu scholar has listed more
than one thousand festivals. Some of them include:
Shiva, Ganesh, Holi, Rama Navami, Dassera, Navaratri,
and Diwali.
BUDDHISM
*Buddhism originated in northern India in the 5 th
century BCE; its founder was Siddhartha Gautama.
*This religion nontheistic.
*It is most prevalent in India and east Asia.
*They believe in reincarnation and rebirth. They
also believe in Nirvana (the state of liberation and
freedom from suffering) , The Four Noble Truths,
and Three Jewels.
*Their holy texts are Pali Tipitika, Mahayana,
Vajrayana, and Canons.
*Their key individual is Siddhartha Gautama
*Their belief in Karma and Nirvana are some things
that make this religion unique.
*some of their holidays include the Buddhist New
Year, Vesak, Magha, Puja Day, Uposatha, Kathina
Ceremony, Songkran, and Elephant festival.
