Citrix Command Center
This deployment sizing guide will help you decide the right
resource allocation for your Command Center installation.
Deciding the right deployment depends on following factors:
1.Deployment Type: If you want a plug & play or self-deployed solution.
2.Syslog’s: If you are looking for syslog management.
3.Vector SNMP Counters: If you are looking to get reports across any of these counters for NetScale

4.Devices: Number of devices you want to manage and monitor
Deployment Type
The first step is to decide type of deployment you need. There are two types of deployment available –
software & hardware.
• Software Deployment
-- Command Center software solution should be considered when the user wants to manage
their own database & operating system. • Hardware Deployment
-- Command Center Hardware solution should be deployed when the user does not want to
manage their own database or operating system and wants a plug and play solution. The
hardware solution always comes in HA pair.
Data Profile
Data profile encompasses the next two factors of deployment consideration – Syslog’s & Counters.
Selection of the right data profile will depend on the kind of features you are looking to enable on your
Command Center Deployment. You will need to enable Syslog collection, if you want NetScaler
AppFirewall™ Reports, NetScaler Gateway™ Reports or complete NetScaler® logging information.
Whereas for Vector SNMP counters, you can enable specific counter groups as needed. Syslog & Vector
SNMP counters are the most data guzzling sources. The data profiles can be segregated into two types:
• Basic Data Profile
-- This data profile will have all the basic default data enabled. It will have default Scalar SNMP
counters and SNMP Traps enabled only.
• Advance Data Profile
-- This data profile will have all the basic default data along with a few or all the data guzzling
sources enabled. It will have default Scalar SNMP counters, SNMP Traps, Syslog’s and Vector
Counters enabled too.

Now, further sections should be selected based on the selection of deployment type and data profiles.
Command Center Hardware Appliance
The Hardware version is a plug and play solution. The Operating System, Database and the Command
Center Software are all packaged together in the hardware solution. Here are the technical details of
the hardware appliance:
• Operating System - CentOS 5.5 64-bit
• Database - MySQL 5.1.48, 32 bit
• Hypervisor - XenServer®
• Hard Disk – 500 GB
It always comes in High-Availability pair. With HA deployment coupled with Database over both the
nodes, it also provides data replication support across the primary/secondary nodes.
Recommended MAXIMUM number of Devices to be managed per installation – 250 Devices
Command Center Software
The Software version will need to be installed on a supported operating system & will need to be
associated to a database. Below are the sizing recommendations across Linux and Windows
Operating System.

-- Advance Data Profile : 60 Devices

Note: Observed Data Rate for these recommendation are as follows:
• SNMP Traps per Device – 10 traps/second per device
• Syslog per Device – 10 Syslog’s/second per device

Points To Note
The sizing guidelines in this section will help the Command Center Software administrators decide how
much database storage to allocate and for Command Center Hardware administrators how much data
collection to enable for optimum scalability. Here are few facts to know before getting started.
Evaluation Vs. Enterprise Version
When you install Command Center Software, you’ll be prompted with Evaluation versus Enterprise
Deployment. Below are the details as to when should these versions be considered:
• Evaluation: Evaluation version lets you deploy command center without needing an external
database installation. It has a PostgreSQL install packaged in it. It is important to note that
Evaluation version is not recommended for Production Deployment as it will not scale well to
manage production deployments. This should only be used for evaluation of Command Center.
• Enterprise: To deploy Enterprise version you will need to have an external database linked to
Command Center. It is recommended to have the Enterprise version installed for Production
Deployments for higher scalability.
Distributed Deployment:
Factors to consider for distributed deployment, where one Command Center is managing devices
deployed in different geographical locations.
• Time zone
-- All the devices being managed by Command Center and the Command Center deployment,
should be NTP synced.

• WAN Latency
-- If Command Center is managing devices located in different Geographical locations, the
administrator will have to be mindful of the acceptable range of WAN Latency across the
locations.
-- It is recommended to have less than 500 ms as the WAN latency between Command Center
and the devices being managed.
Database Sizing Guidelines
The database estimation guidelines depends on 4 data sources.
1.Counters
• SNMP Scalar Counters (default)
• SNMP Vector Counters
2.Syslog’s
3.SNMP Traps (default)
4.Configuration & Others
Out of these four only the first and second affect the database storage the most.
Based on what is enabled the database estimate will vary. Let’s look into database estimate
calculation with SNMP counters and syslog’s enabled.
Counters
What are scalar & vector counters?
Scalar counters are singular in nature. When one of the scalar counters are polled, only one value will
be returned per device. Whereas, when vector counters are polled, multiple values are returned per
device. For instance, if one “vserver hits” counter is polled, one NetScaler device will return statistics
across all the vservers configured on that one NetScaler.

Note: The polling interval is kept as 300 sec (default) for all the SNMP counter specific references in
this guide.

SNMP Traps, Configuration & Others
This guide has considered 20 GB as the storage space needed for SNMP Traps, configuration and
other functionality. Following methods can be taken if certain SNMP traps needs to be suppressed or
configuration archive settings need to be changed.
Purging Unwanted Snmp Traps
Select “Suppress Action” as a Trigger to suppress certain SNMP traps to populate your Events/Alarms
dashboard

Conclusion
The storage allocation depends on which source of data is enabled, the data sent rate and for how
long the data is maintained. Based on how much database storage can be allocated, the data sources
should be enabled, disabled or purged at the right interval for optimum scalability of the command
center deployment. Based on your requirement, you will need to pick up the right data profile to
decide the right storage allocation.
