Measures of Central Tendency
Central Tendency – number that represents center or middle for a set of data.
3 Measures of Central Tendency:
1. Mean – sometimes called Arithmetic Mean, is the average for a set of data.
It is based upon the center value for the set of data.
Mean = Sum of all data items / Number of Data Items.
Example: Find the average of the following numbers: 1,2,3,4,5.
2. Median – is the middle number when the data is ordered from smallest to
largest. It is based upon the number order of data items to find the center in
the set of data.
If odd # of data items, then find the middle number.
Example: Find the median of the following data: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
If even # of data items, then take the average of the two middle numbers.
Example: Find the median of the following data: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
3. Mode – is the most frequent or number that occurs most often for a set of
data. It is based upon the frequency of a number in the data set. Note: The
mode may or may not indicate the center of the data.
Example: 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6
Mode = 4
Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6
Mode = 4, 6
