The Patriarchs and the Origins of Judaism Assignment
Name: __________________________
To be called a "Jew" can have different meaning according to the context of the community. Traditionally, the
term "Jewish" is used to reflect 3 different meanings or a combination of the 3:
Ethnic Jew: used to refer to an individual or group who can trace their origin directly back to Abraham. This
implies sanguinity -- or a direct blood line traced through the mother.
Cultural Jew: used to refer to an individual or group who do not share the beliefs of the Jewish religion but
who celebrate or participate in Jewish culture. Sanguinity is not necessary.
Religious Jew: used to refer to an individual or group who shares a common set of beliefs about God and
who participate to some extent in the Religion of Judaism. Sanguinity is not necessary.
Assignment
As we have learned, the establishment of sanguinity is a fundamental aspect of early Judaism. We have also
learned that Jews interpret the Tanakh using the concept of nothing added and nothing taken away. In fact,
there is significant amount of time dedicated in Jewish scripture establishing the connection between
individual characters and the Twelve Tribes of Israel.
After reading the handout The Patriarchs and the Origins of Judaism you will create a Genogram of the early
patriarchs of Judaism that begins with the first figure mentioned in the article and ends with the last character
mentioned.
The genogram must show:
1. all the mentioned characters connected properly within the family tree
2. major accomplishments mentioned for the important characters
3. Timeline that shows important dates (you`ll have to figure the dates out using provided info)
