If you want to speak
• Stand up and hold one of your speaking cards
• If you get called on, you may speak
– I will call on people who haven’t spoken yet first
– if you have something good, be patient
– When you are speaking, you may speak as long
as you’d like
– When you are finished speaking, the other side
gets to speak before anyone on your team can
speak
When can I speak?
• Whenever you have something good to say,
stand up with one of your speaking cards
– You do not have to wait for your group’s topic
• If you are “habitat loss,” and you have something
good to say about “pollution,” jump up and say it
• If your team loses “pollution,” you want to help your
team win “invasive species!” Speak up!
• As long as you have speaking cards, you may
speak whenever you’d like (if you get called
on)
How I am moderating the debate
•
•
•
•
I will introduce the topics
I will call on students to speak
I will make sure we are taking turns
I will decide to move us along if we seem to be
going too slow
• I will score the arguments
– At the end of “pollution,” one team will get a point
– At the end of “invasive species,” one team will get a
point
– At the end of “habitat loss,” one team will get a point
• The team that gets 2 of the 3 possible points wins
Grades? Prizes?
• Yes! You will be graded on what you SAY in
the debate
– You will also have a written argument after the
debate is over
• You must speak at least one time
– If the things you say are good, based on which
team you are on (boosters, doomers) you will
receive a good grade for debating
– If the things you say do not help your team, you
will receive a lesser grade for debating
• Winning team will receive a candy prize too,
as well as the thrill of victory
