Physical Barriers Inflammatory Response Immune System Physical Barriers Skin Chemicals on your skin help kill pathogens Example: Sweat or Oil Repairs itself to avoid pathogens Mucous Membranes Soft tissues that line your: Nose, Mouth, Throat, Digestive Tract, Urethra, and Vagina Traps pathogens in the slimy mucous Then gets sent to your stomach where it is destroyed Physical Barriers Chemicals Many of the chemicals your body makes destroy pathogens Sweat Oil Stomach Acid Tears Inflammatory Response Inflammation: a reaction to injury or infection that is characterized by: Pain Swelling Redness Inflammatory Response Your body responds with inflammation when the protective physical barriers are broken and an infection occurs. What is inflammation? A small blood vessels expand to bring more blood to the injured area. Pus: dead and injured body cells that were fighting off bacteria Your body is attacking pathogens Immune System The immune system is made up of certain types of blood cells and certain proteins called ANTIBODIES Lymphatic System A network of vessels that carry a clear fluid called lymph throughout the body. Picks up fluid all over the body Sweeps up bacteria and/or viruses and carries them to the lymph nodes. Lymph Nodes Filled with White blood cells that scan the lymph for pathogens. White Blood Cells: cells in the blood whose primary job is to defend against disease. Immune System Takes time to fight off disease Typically attacks a specific pathogen. Skin, Mucous, Inflammation fights off any pathogen. What you can do to Stay Well 1. Protect yourself: Keeping your body healthy. 2. Eat a healthy balanced diet: A lack of certain nutrients in your diet can weaken your immune system 3. Drink Water: Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to keep your immune system working effectively What you can do to stay healthy? 4. Reduce your stress level: it will leave you vulnerable to illness 5. Exercise Regularly: Get a least 60 minutes of activity daily. 6. Get regular medical check-ups: Seeing your doctor or dentist regularly can prevent infection 7. Try to avoid close contact with sick people: Wash your hands, do not share personal items 8. Get enough sleep: 8 hours a day. Vaccination – pg. 325 Vaccines: are substances usually prepared from killed or weakened pathogens or from genetic material and that is introduced to the body to produce immunity. Boosters: extra doses of the vaccines to maintain production What to do when you are sick? Symptoms: the changes that you notice in your body or mind that are caused by disease or disorder. Know the symptoms 5 signs that you need to seek Medical Care 1. You have difficulty breathing 2. You have severe pain somehwere 3. Your temperature is 101 degrees or more and lasts for more than 2 days 4. You have a cut that does not heal properly 5. Mucous from your nose, throat, or lungs is thick and yellowish green.
