Protecting Yourself from
Infectious Disease
May 11, 2017
How Does Your Body Fight Off
Disease?
 Physical Barriers
 Inflammatory Response
 Immune System
Physical Barriers
 Skin
 Chemicals on your skin help kill pathogens
 Example: Sweat or Oil
 Repairs itself to avoid pathogens
 Mucous Membranes
 Soft tissues that line your:
 Nose, Mouth, Throat, Digestive Tract, Urethra,
and Vagina
 Traps pathogens in the slimy mucous
 Then gets sent to your stomach where it is
destroyed
Physical Barriers
 Chemicals
 Many of the chemicals your body makes
destroy pathogens




Sweat
Oil
Stomach Acid
Tears
Inflammatory Response
 Inflammation: a reaction to injury or
infection that is characterized by:
 Pain
 Swelling
 Redness
Inflammatory Response
 Your body responds with
inflammation when the protective
physical barriers are broken and an
infection occurs.
What is inflammation?
 A small blood vessels expand to bring
more blood to the injured area.
 Pus: dead and injured body cells that
were fighting off bacteria
 Your body is attacking pathogens
Immune System
 The immune system is made up of
certain types of blood cells and
certain proteins called ANTIBODIES
Lymphatic System
 A network of vessels that carry a
clear fluid called lymph throughout
the body.
 Picks up fluid all over the body
 Sweeps up bacteria and/or viruses
and carries them to the lymph nodes.
Lymph Nodes
 Filled with White blood cells that scan
the lymph for pathogens.
 White Blood Cells: cells in the blood
whose primary job is to defend
against disease.
Immune System
 Takes time to fight off disease
 Typically attacks a specific pathogen.
 Skin, Mucous, Inflammation fights off
any pathogen.
What you can do to Stay Well
1. Protect yourself: Keeping your body
healthy.
2. Eat a healthy balanced diet: A lack of
certain nutrients in your diet can
weaken your immune system
3. Drink Water: Drink 8-10 glasses of
water a day to keep your immune
system working effectively
What you can do to stay healthy?
4. Reduce your stress level: it will leave you
vulnerable to illness
5. Exercise Regularly: Get a least 60 minutes
of activity daily.

your doctor or dentist regularly can
prevent infection

Wash your hands, do not share personal
items
8. Get enough sleep: 8 hours a day.
Vaccination – pg. 325
 Vaccines: are substances usually
prepared from killed or weakened
pathogens or from genetic material
and that is introduced to the body to
produce immunity.
 Boosters: extra doses of the vaccines
to maintain production
What to do when you are sick?
 Symptoms: the changes that you
notice in your body or mind that are
