Plum Pudding Model
Thomson originally believed that a hydrogen atom
contained more than 2,000 electrons because
electrons are more than 2,000 times lighter than a
hydrogen atom.
An atom made of thousands of electrons would
have a very high negative charge, but atoms are
usually uncharged.
In 1906 Thomson suggested that atoms contained
far fewer electrons. He suggested that the number
of electrons was roughly close to the atomic
The electrons had to have been balanced by a
positive charge. Since this distribution was
unknown he proposed the Plum Pudding Model in
1904. This was later disproven by Rutherford.
