VERBS of SAYING in ANCIENT GREEK
Forms in bold are the most common in Attic Greek for each tense.
Present Tense
• λέγω
• φημί (φημί* φῄς, φησί*,φαμέν*, φατέ*, φασί* * = enclitic)
o οὔ φημι = refuse, deny, say that something is not so
o Î φάσκω = assert, say often
• ἠμί "I say" ἠσί "s/he says"
o only 1st sg and 3d sg forms exist; used only parenthetically
• εἴρω (Homeric; mostly in middle)
o Î ἔρομαι and ἐρωτάω "ask" in Attic
• λαλέω = babble (Attic), speak (koine)
• ἀγορεύω = proclaim
Imperfect Tense
• λέγω Î ἔλεγον κτλ
• φημί Î ἔφην, ἔφησθα/ἔφης, ἔφη, ἔφαμεν, ἔφατε, ἔφασαν
o φάσκω Î ἔφασκον κτλ
• ἦν "I said" and ἦ "s/he said"
• λαλέω Î ἔλαλουν
• ἀγορεύω Î ἠγόρευον
Future Tense
• λέγω Î λέξω
• φημί Î φήσω κτλ
• εἴρω Î ἐρῶ
• λαλέω Î λαλήσω
Aorist Tense
• λέγω Î ἔλεξα
• φημί Î ἔφησα
• *ἔπω Î εἶπον
o this verb attested only in aorist tense
• λαλέω Î ἐλάλησα
Perfect Tense
• λέγω Î λέλεγμαι κτλ (exists only in middle)
• φημί Î πεφάσθω "let it be said"
o 3d sg imperative passive is only form attested in this tense
• εἴρω Î εἴρηκα
• λαλέω Î λελάληκα
