Monday 11/30: Southwest Asia & North Africa—map work & physical geography
 Reading: handout received in class on Friday on the physical geography of the Middle East: Southwest
Asia and North Africa
Tuesday 12/1: Essential Question for Discussion: How did geography impact the development of
civilization in Mesopotamia and Egypt? We will discuss the physical geography of the Middle East:
Southwest Asia and North Africa
 No new reading for today
Wednesday 12/2: Essential Question for Discussion: How did the Sumerians contribute to the growth of
civilization in Mesopotamia?
Reading:
 p. 19-23 (review this) and p. 29-32 (stop at “The First Empire Builders”)
 Take SPRITE+G notes. Once you’ve read, REVIEW your notes and determine which SPRITE
questions you can answer. Develop a general statement answering each of those questions. Then
use the details from the reading as evidence to support your general statement. This is how you
should do your SPRITE notes EVERY TIME you read. It will take you more time to complete
the homework assignment, but really THINKING about what you read will aid in retention and
understanding!!
Thursday 12/3: Essential Questions for Discussion: What is an Empire and who built the first Empire?
and what important idea did Hammurabi’s Babylon contribute to civilization? We will finish up our
discussion of the Sumerians and then discuss the Akkadians, and Babylonians.
Reading:
 p. 32-34 (start with “The First Empire Builders”) and read to the end of the section. Make sure
you read the primary source on p. 33.
 Use the new info in this reading to answer any of the SPRITE questions you can about each new
group of people—Akkadians and Babylonians. There won’t be much—mostly “P” for both—but
what is there is important!
Friday 12/4: Video Middlemen—map/atlas work

 Describe the location of major physical features and their impact on North Africa/Southwest Asia.
 Describe the major climates of North Africa/Southwest Asia and how they have affected the development of North
Africa/Southwest Asia.
 Analyze the impact natural resources, especially oil; have on North Africa/Southwest Asia.
 Analyze the impact of water supplies on the growth of population centers.
 Explain why this region contains areas on two different continents.
SSWH1 The student will analyze the origins, structures, and interactions of complex societies in the ancient Eastern
Mediterranean from 3500 BCE to 500 BCE.
 Describe the development of Mesopotamian societies; include the religious, cultural, economic, and political facets of
society, with attention to Hammurabi’s law code.
 Explain the development and importance of writing; include cuneiform, hieroglyphics, and the Phoenician alphabet.

Reading for Monday 12/7: p. 35-43
 Take a new set of SPRITE notes on the Old Kingdom from the text and the video

 If you have finished the reading you will have NO NEW READING FOR TUESDAY
Wednesday 12/9: Essential Questions for Discussion: What were the contributions to civilization of New
Kingdom Egypt?
Reading:
 In your text read pages 89-92 (stop at “The Kushites Conquer the Nile Region”)
 Also read the one page handout received in class on Tuesday
 Take a new set of SPRITE notes on the NEW KINGDOM using both sources.
Thursday 12/10: Essential Questions for Discussion: What important ideas did the Phoenicians
contribute to civilization?
Reading:
 In your textbook read pages 73-76 (start at the “Phoenicians Spread Trade and Civilization” and
read to the end of the section)
 Take a new set of SPRITE+G notes on the Phoenicians
Friday 12/11: MAP QUIZ on the physical and political maps of the Middle East: Southwest Asia and
North Africa.

SSWH1 The student will analyze the origins, structures, and interactions of complex societies in the ancient Eastern
Mediterranean from 3500 BCE to 500 BCE.
 Describe the development of Mesopotamian societies; include the religious, cultural, economic, and political facets of

 Describe the relationship of religion and political authority in Ancient Egypt.
 Explain the development of monotheism; include the concepts developed by the ancient Hebrews, and Zoroastrianism.
 Identify early trading networks and writing systems existent in the Eastern Mediterranean, including those of the Phoenicians.
 Explain the development and importance of writing; include cuneiform, hieroglyphics, and the Phoenician alphabet.

