Advantages of Having Computer There is no one who’ll object to the fact that people in today’s society has benefitted from the emergence of computers compared to people 100 years ago. Even at this very moment, computers are making people’s lives easier and more convenient. The evolution of computer has aided our society for the better. It enables people to save time and effort. It is incredible that you can do almost anything through the click of a computer mouse. Internet access is one of the biggest advantages of owning a computer. You can obtain numerous types of data, such as news from all around the world, driving directions, weather updates, traffic condition updates, etc. The Internet, through the access of a computer, allows the user to transfer and deposit money without having to physically go to a bank. Online banking allows people to manage their money and time more effectively. It eliminates the task of having to update your checkbook to see how much you have left in your account. This allows the person to make no errors, since the bank is directly showing you what they have on file. Computers are also used for entertainment purposes. You can watch movies or listen to music. You can even play games on the computer. The computer, being able to do so many things, is the one machine that can be truly given the title of being a multipurpose device. Evolution of Computer Computer, which is imbedded into people’s lives, is not a machine that just appeared one day. Computer has gone through many developments and it has been redesigned many times to become what it is today. Some people say that the computers started their evolution from being a mere abacus, calculator type devices. According to the study conducted in the University of San Diego College of Arts, computers evolution began with its first introduction by John V. Atanasoff in 1937 called Atanasoff-Berry. In 1939, the magnetic drum memory was invented for the AtanasoffBerry Computer. During 1945, the Atanasoff-Berry Computer experienced it’s first computer bug error. 1951, UNIVAC I, became the first computer in USA to be used commercially, for the purpose of business and corporations, it was named UNIVAC I. UNIVAC I was used to predict the presidential election in 1952. UNIVAC I claimed the computer market for corporations and other business, thus being very expensive to rent. However, IBM 650 showed up to the market, giving UNIVAC I a competition. The first generation of computers used vacuum tubes as part of its design, but the second generation of computers was redesigned to use transistors. IBM 604 was the first computer to use transistors. Thanks to IBM’s incorporation of the transistor technology, it successfully helped the banking business to invent the ATM machine. Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments patented the first integrated circuit, IC, in 1959. This marked another redesigning and development of the third generation of computers. American Airline introduced the first airline reservation tracking system in 1968 through IBM’s SABRE computer system. During this time, Intel produced a large scale IC that were used in the digital delay line in 1971, it is marked as the first introduction of digital audio device. The fourth generation of computers was built on the foundation of using microprocessor. Microprocessor was a huge innovation in the computer market. It was used to create a calculator that operated on a single chip with the aid of IBM’s 8-inch memory disk. Busicom introduced this single chip calculator. During this fourth generation computer period, Nintendo Corporation was formed. It was the first “home gaming system” introduced to the consumer market. Computer games that stored the data on a chip in what is called a “cartridge” was marketed by Nintendo for their home gaming system. Donkey Kong was the first game introduced by Nintendo in 1981, followed by the world acclaimed game “Super Mario Bros” in 1985. Apple Corporation introduced the first computer system for consumers called Apple Machintosh and a software program called HyperCard. Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web (www.), the first internet realm for the consumer market and home personal computer systems. This marked the fifth evolution in the computer world. UNIX, Netscape Navigator, and Internet Explorer was created during this period. The fifth generation time era for computers began from 1991. The computers we use today is the fifth generation computers. As everyone is fully aware, computer world is quick in it’s creation of new technology, in even as little as three month, new updates and improved computer designs are introduced to the mainstream market. Computers has come a long way in a rapid speed during the last 55 years. Work Citation Schoenherr, Steven. "The Evolution of the Computer." May 1 2007.
