Symphony No. 1, subtitled “New Day Rising,” is a major work for concert band based programmatically on the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. This four-movement work was commissioned and premiered by the Contra Costa Wind Symphony on the centennial of the earthquake. “This is a landmark publication for us, the first-ever full-length symphony publication in our long history,” noted company President Chuck Barnhouse. The four movements depict, in the colorful and dramatic style which has become a trademark of this composer, the city of San Francisco before, during, and after the quake. Movement I, entitled “City of Gold,” depicts a vibrant San Francisco of the ragtime era. Movement II, “Nocturne,” describes the city as night falls and the inhabitants close their day, unaware that catastrophe awaits. Movement III, “And the Earth Trembled,” depicts the actual quake as it unleashes its massive destruction. The final movement, “New Day Rising,” depicts the rebuilding of shattered lives and restoring of civilization, progressing from despair into restored faith and renewed hope. CEO Andy Clark remarked, “While the entire work, performed completely, runs approximately 35 minutes, each movement can be performed independently, and is being published separately. All four movements are now in print.” The complete recorded symphony, as performed by the Washington Winds, is on the new Walking Frog Records CD, “New Day Rising: The Music of Steven Reineke,” available from Walking Frog Records. COO Andrew Glover added, “We are excited to be the publisher of this tremendous new band work. I am certain that Reineke fans will be thrilled by this landmark work, and we are very proud of our association with this outstanding composer.” Click on the movements listed above to view scores and hear excerpt recordings of Symphony No. 1, “New Day Rising.” Also, visit Steven Reineke’s composer page for a list of his many other excellent publications.
