Year 3 Curriculum Information Spring 2016
Our Spring Context for Learning is ‘From the Earth'.
This term we will be using 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes
and focussing on the environment as vehicles for learning.
English:
In Literacy we will begin the term by studying the book The
Iron Man by Ted Hughes. To support the children's writing we
will be concentrating on VCOP (vocabulary, connectives,
openers and punctuation). Our written work (with a focus on
writing in the first person) will be enhanced by speaking and
listening activities such as role-play, debate and conscience
alley.
The children will also be learning and performing poetry.
To link in with our science work, our non-fiction writing will
concentrate on the features of explanation texts.
Please remember to read every day and change your books
regularly.
Maths:
Following our work on the 4 operations we will be moving on to
fractions both of the whole and of numbers and beginning to
add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
We will look at a wide range of mathematical investigations and
continue to apply our mathematical skills to solve these
problems.
We will also be looking at geometry focussing on 2d and 3d
shapes and angles.
Work on measures will include time.
Mental maths skills will be practised on a regular basis;
including times-tables, number bonds for each number up to 20
and addition and subtraction skills.
Please don’t forget to do your homework each week and
practise your times tables, especially your 2,3,4,5, (6,8).
Science:
In Science we are learning about rocks and soils, including the
formation of fossils.
Our scientific enquiry skills will continue to focus on making
predictions, drawing conclusions and the importance of fair
testing.
Key Vocabulary: fair test, observations, predictions,
conclusions, sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous, mineral, crust,
magma, mantle, lava, inner/outer core, permeable, particles,
quarry, fossils.
ICT:
In ICT we will be looking at branching databases and creating
our own based on rocks.
Art:
In Art we will look at developing tone and shade techniques
using a variety of media.
To link in with our cross curricular learning we will be
replicating cave paintings and using stop-frame animimation.
DT:
In preparation for the summer term’s focus on recycling, D&T
work this term will involve looking at ways to recycle and
upcycle “waste” materials.
Geography:
In Geography we will be studying the environment and the
impact of our actions on the local area and globally.
We will also focus on earthquakes to link in with our science
topic on rocks and soils.
History:
This term we will be exploring the period from the Stone Age
to the Iron Age, focussing on how human communities
developed and evolved. We will consider a variety of forms of
historical evidence and the children will be learning about the
difference between prehistory, ancient and modern history.
PE:
For the first half of the Spring Term, Games will be on a
Friday afternoon at the Athletics Track. We will continue to go
swimming on Tuesday morning. In Gym/Dance lessons we will
be creating a dance sequence based on the Iron Man.
RE:
In RE we will be focussing on signs and symbols and also be
learning about the Christian festival of Easter and Lent.
Music:
This term we will be continuing with Recorder Karate and
learning pieces of progressive difficulty.
In terms of music literacy, we will be reading and writing
simple musical notation and improvising simple patterns on the
recorder.
French:
This term our first topic is” Travels”. We will learn to talk
about how we go to school and how we travel to our holiday
destinations. We will also learn about the countries of the
world which have French as their official language.
We will learn the verbs for cooking as well as the names of
kitchen utensils and cook some French recipes.
