Emerson Network Power Surge Protection Devices Meet UL Safety
Standards Without Need for Modifications
BINGHAMTON, NY [Nov. 20, 2009] – Emerson Network Power, a business of
Emerson (NYSE:EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical
Continuity™ today announced its Liebert, Edco and PowerSure brands of surge
protection devices have been tested and certified to comply with the new Underwriters
Laboratory (UL) safety standards without requiring product modifications.
“Emerson typically meets or exceeds regulatory standards years in advance of their
effective date of compliance,” said Sarah Beadle, director of marketing, for the Surge
Protection business of Emerson Network Power. “Not only have our products long met
or exceeded UL 1449 Third Edition, they already are compliant with 2012 requirements
of UL 1283 Fifth Edition for electromagnetic interference filters. Few, if any other
companies can make that claim.”
UL 1449 Third Edition specifies that surge suppression products formerly identified as
Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors (TVSS) universally will be termed Surge
Protective Devices (SPDs).
In addition, the revised standard combines all categories of SPDs into a system of
categorization based, in part, on the location within a distribution system where they are
to be installed.

Underwriters Laboratory has also changed clamp voltage testing from 6kV, 500A to 6kV,
3,000A - representing six-times more surge current.
